Newmarket will soon offer the biggest shopping mall in New Zealand and one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Of particular excitement is news of securing an anchor tenant, David Jones department store.

The retail space is set to open towards the end of 2019 and spans some 179,380sqm, with 88,150sqm in the mall alone – undertaken by Australian retail developer, Scentre Group.

Senior Property Manager, Sara Sheldon says, “Newmarket’s affluent suburb will be an ideal setting for new local and international fashion designers, specialty stores, cinemas, restaurants and dining areas. The existing mall alone is being expanded to nearly three times its size. I have read figures of expecting about 15-20 million shoppers through the doors every year, and predictions of annual turnover of around $600 million.”

A dining, lifestyle and entertainment precinct on the rooftop will include a new Event Cinemas complex, finest food and beverage options and a truly unique hospitality experience.

“It will be a wonderful addition to Newmarket, bringing visitors to an already prominent and well-established retail scene. It must be challenging curating an experience to rival nearby competition – securing the first Auckland-based David Jones is a fantastic win. It will be interesting to hear of further announcements in terms of new retailers to NZ. Creating a ‘living centre’ for people to eat shop and play in the heart of Newmarket will be an excellent drawcard for visitors to the area.” Sara reflects.

Newmarket hasn’t seen anything like this in the past 20 years. The shopping catchment and consumer profile will widen to include visitors from around the country.

This is a significant investment and will no doubt be reflected in healthy retail sales – happy shopping everyone!
